“From a very early age, I would dream of someday becoming a teacher. When I was a child my favorite game was to play school and I was the teacher. This vocation comes from generations of teachers. Today, there are more than 10 teachers in my family.”
Becoming a teacher was Maria’s greatest achievement. Not only because she joined a long line of teachers in her family, but she also relishes the ability to work where her child is each day.
Born in Monterrey, NL Mexico, Maria received a degree in business administration from Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon. She worked with Citibank for nearly 10 years. After getting married, she migrated to the United States because her husband was a U.S. citizen serving in the United States Navy. They were stationed in San Diego, Calif., where they lived for two years until he retired after 20 years of service.
She moved to Houston in 2002 and after the birth of her daughter, Maria returned to work, but in the child care field. She was a lead teacher in the infant room at Growing Scholars Montessori School. To be close to her daughter, she chose to work in the cafeteria at Keith Elementary, where she was able to study childhood nutrition and earned several certifications in nutrition.
She currently lives in Cypress with her husband, Jesse, and their daughter, Sarah Marie, who will be a freshman at Bridgeland High School. They also have two dogs, Matthew Alexander and Lucky Joseph. She enjoys listening to music, reading and exercising.
