Pre-K/ Kindergarten/ 1st
Pre-K through 1st grade students are at the beginning of their art journey in a school setting. Students learn about various art-making mediums and how to handle art supplies kinetically through step-by-step procedure and contained experimentation. Other core curricula, the Catholic faith and technology are all incorporated into the art classroom. Students will begin to develop their art-making skills, and start to identify basic art history.
2nd-3rd Grade
Our 2nd and 3rd grade students move away from strictly experimental art-making and take their basic knowledge of the arts and learn to use it in a more controlled, ordered, and neat manner. Students begin to learn basic art-making techniques using various mediums, that may require more steps then younger grades. Students incorporate core curricula, technology, art history, and the Catholic faith into their artwork. Students begin to explore how the different elements of art can convey different feelings and emotions, and how artists use this to communicate to viewers. Our 2nd and 3rd grade students will learn and be given more responsibilities for receiving art supplies and maintaining a clean art studio.
4th-5th Grade
Our 4th and 5th grade students learn more challenging art-making techniques that require more steps, also requiring more responsibility in gathering supplies and maintaining a clean studio. Students are given more open-ended assignments that lead to more thought and creativity going in to each assignment. Students begin to learn how to communicate through their art with symbolism and the proper usage of the elements of art. Projects are paired with core curricula, technology, the Catholic faith, and/ or art history. The goal for 4th and 5th grade art is to get students to not only learn more difficult art-making skills, but to pair projects with reasoning and meaning behind each project, which will better prepare them for junior high art.
6th-8th Grade
Our 6th-8th grade students learn to refine their art-making skills in a more sophisticated way as opposed to elementary art. Middle school art touches on the beginnings of high school art and the main goal for this age is to prepare them to have the basic skills and ideology for a high school Art 1 class and beyond. Students will master all elements of art and principles of design through the use of various techniques in art-making. Students will also incorporate art history, the Catholic faith, other core curricula, and technology into their art. Students will begin to create their own unique voice and communicate a message through their artwork.
In the Spanish classes at Christ the Redeemer, it is our goal to teach Spanish as a whole language...a culture. We incorporate not just new vocabulary and grammar, but also speaking, reading and listening comprehension, the arts, literature and the study of countries and their history. It is our goal to develop a program in which our students will not only develop a love of languages, but will be able to receive a high school credit for Spanish I upon graduation from Christ the Redeemer. It is our hope that the study of Spanish will foster a life-long enthusiasm and interest for all languages.
1st-3rd Grade
We begin their language adventure by learning basic questions with responses, new vocabulary, and basic sounds of the alphabet. The students participate in many varied activities such as presenting dialogs using puppets, learning new songs and dances, participating in many SmartBoard activities and participating in different cultural activities from around the Spanish-speaking world.
4th-5th Grade
We continue their study of Spanish building on their basic foundation. These students will be introduced to some basic grammar, short paragraph writing, listening and reading comprehension skills and participate in different cultural activities from around the Spanish-speaking world.
6th-8th Grade
We will use a high school textbook and complete it in three years. Our program offers a 21st century approach to language learning where the students learn not just grammar and vocabulary. Students learn the importance of communication and the complex nature of the Spanish culture. Students learn to develop their skills requiring the application of the Spanish language in everyday life. Each lesson includes communication, culture, grammar, vocabulary and comparisons.
All students are exposed to a wide range of music experiences including singing, movement, instrument technique, theory, creative experiences, and appreciation. Through music, students will be participating in activities that require them to be actively engaged, creative, disciplined and flexible, and to work cooperatively with others. Kodaly, World Music Pedagogy, Solfège, Orff-Schulwerk, RSCM, and Dalcroze music methodologies of instruction are utilized.
Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten
Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten students will explore musical notations and instrumentation through these methods which allow them to experience music in the most natural way possible.
1st-2nd Grade
Students 1st-2nd grade will continue exploring these musical methods in order to become better sight readers, singers, and musicians.
3rd-5th Grade
Students 3rd-5th grade advances into singing harmonics and canons with sharper diction, tones, and expression. Composers and world music play a tremendous role in their music studies, and assist them composing and editing digital. Learning the mechanics of an instrument, the function of the instrument and the sound of the instrument enables the student to create instruments in S.T.R.E.A.M. activities.
6th-8th Grade
The middle school students further demonstrate these music disciplines by learning to play handbells, sing in three voices, explore early Church music and composers, and compose and edit digital music. Choral performances are scheduled through the school year in the fall and spring semester, exhibiting true artistry in musicianship.
