Christ the Redeemer Catholic School 5th grade students recently finished up an initiative called the Pajama Program.
The Pajama Program is a nationally recognized giving opportunity through Scholastic Books. According to the Scholastic Books website, since 2009, classrooms nationwide have collected and donated more than 730,000 pajamas to at-risk children through Pajama Program. Scholastic Book Clubs has more than matched that number by donating more than one million books. CtRCS 5th grade students were a part of that giving this school year.
Teacher Lisa Sansbury said Scholastic matches a book to every pair of pajamas donated to the Pajama Program.
“The pajama program provides comfort to children in need,” she said. “We support our children locally through
Arms Wide Adoption Agency.”
She said the students really enjoyed giving in this way.
“The students were excited to see our donation collection grow as they could see that more children were going to benefit from our generosity,” Sansbury said. “The students were excited to share their own enjoyment of reading combined with the comfort of pajamas.”
Community service projects are a part of the curriculum at CtRCS. Each grade level picks a service project for that school year and work together to service our local community and learn what it is like to be the hand and feet of Jesus Christ to others.
“As a part of learning the Beatitudes, the students were reminded of the good we were called to do in the community during Hurricane Harvey and that no matter the weather we are called to serve others,” she said. “The students have seen that it is hard to make sacrifices and help others but that it is our duty to do God's will.”
