The Christ the Redeemer Catholic School (CtRCS) Storytelling Group met in the conference room after drop-off on Thursday, Jan. 24. As the first meeting of the group in 2019, it was a time of both reflection and planning for the year. Bridget Richardson, Director of Communications at Christ the Redeemer Catholic Church (CtR) and School, joined the group’s discussion and shared ways the group could make an impact.
As the newest volunteer group at CtRCS, “Storytelling” might not sound familiar.
“Our school is growing, but we’d like parents and families to still get to know each other,” says
Randi Serey, assistant principal at CtRCS.
The mission of the Storytelling Group is to share stories, and photos, about students and their families so that they can get to know each other.
“I knew that I would get to know other parents by volunteering for things, but I am starting to cross paths with school families in other situations as well,” says CtRCS parent Jeannie Bergmann.
The most obvious way to encounter other CtRCS families outside of school hours is Mass at CtR.
“A lot of our students’ families are asked to bring up the gifts at Mass,” said Serey.
Students have also served as altar servers, and families have signed up to take home the Vocations Chalice to pray for vocations in the
Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston.
Parents who have signed up their students for sports get built-in fellowship time at practices and games. It’s not too late to participate and get to know other CtRCS families. Baseball and tee-ball registration is open until Feb. 15. Parents who have Safe Environment training can also sign up to coach a team.
Visit the CtRCS website to register.
While not an obvious way to meet other CtRCS parents, “Sign Up” parties are one of the best ways to get to know other families that have students of similar ages.
“We try to come up with ideas for parties and events that work for each grade level,” says
Megan Dillingham, director of Advancement at CtR Church and School.
Sign up parties are parent-hosted events that are paid to offset the cost of the event and raise funds for the school budget. Any events that weren’t sold out at the
Chili Cook-Off in November are available for second chance sign ups.
Visit the CtRCS website to sign up for available events.
“My hope is that many parents will hear the stories about what other students and school families are doing, and get inspired to get out there to meet more of them,” says Bergmann. “We also need more parents on the storytelling team to help us get to know even more students and families.”
The next meeting of the Storytelling Group will take place on campus at 8:15 a.m. on Thursday, March 21. Please contact
Bridget Richardson for more information on how you and your family can be featured or feature another student or family in the Crusader Chronicle or CtRCS website.
